CATALONIA EXPECTS A FALL BY 23% IN APPLE AND 31% IN PEAR
The recent hail storm on July 5 has caused a remarkable reduction in apple and pear production in the Catalonia region. The apple harvest for 2012 will be of 255,000 ton, while the pear crop should amount 182,000 tonnes.

A presentation of the updated apple and pear forecasts in Catalonia was held on Friday, July 20, by the Director of the Food, Quality and Agribusiness Department of the Catalonian Ministry of Agriculture, Domènec Vila, with by the Director of Regional Services of the Lleida Department, Cristina Bosch, and the director of AfruCAT, the regional fresh produce association, Manel Simon.

The hail storm of July 5 mainly affected the plain of Lleida, which is the most important producer of this apples and pears in Catalonia - Vila highlighted. The producing area of Girona is instead growing and this year it could harvest 37% of the total Catalan crop, although it must be considered that the decrease in Lleida is 28% and in Girona 12%. The harvest timing will be delayed four to eight days compared to last year.
