AUSTRIA, BIG RETAILERS MATCH WITH DISCOUNTERS
Thanks to a winning price policy and investments in the products' quality, in the first half of 2010 large retailers' food trade in Austria registered a growth by 1.5%, while discounters lost 1.7%.

The growth in turnover of Rewe and Spar, which are the most widespread supermarket chains in Austrua, is due to the price policy on the one hand and investments in quality on the other hand.

Not only discounts up to 25% have been applied on many items and the price level of private label products is almost the same as in discounters, but renovation and restructuring have been undertaken of numerous Billa outlets and winning advertising campaigns have been started.

In 2009, the turnover of the agro-food trade amounted to 17 billion euros: a 2% increase over the previous year. Even in 2008 there has been an increase (+4.2%), attributable almost entirely to higher prices. The growth in 2009 can be considered, differently, a real growth.
