25/08/2010 17:18The production of dates in Tunisia is estimated this year at 45,000 tonnes, a growth rate of 3000 tonnes compared to the previous season, according to initial forecasts of agricultural structures in the governorate of Tozeur, as reported by African Manager.
Tunisia has about 3.3 million date palms, according to figures from the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD), recently published in Khartoum headquarters. Outside the Gulf, Egypt is the "dominant power" in the date-palm with 12.1 million square feet and a production of around 1.32 million tonnes in 2008, the highest production in the Arab world, according to AOAD. Algeria has also emerged as a major producer, with about 11.9 million trees and a production of about 552,000 tons in 2008.
Morocco has 4.39 million date palms, but its production is relatively low at around 72,000 tons. At the bottom, the AOAD report indicates Kuwait and Qatar, with nearly 312,000 and 335,000 trees respectively, then Palestine with nearly 301,000, Mauritania with 600,000 and Syria with approximately 85,000 T.
